Garage Door Spring Repair And Replacement in Norristown, PA

garage door spring repair

Very little attention is paid to the garage door springs considering they are the single most important part of your garage door. If it weren’t for the springs, your door would lack the ability to open and close, which we’d say is a pretty important feature.

Broken garage door springs are one of the most common repair calls Jaydor receives, so if you are looking to have your springs replaced you’ve come to the right place.

Common Garage Door Spring Repairs

Types of Garage Door Springs

While there are many styles of garage doors, residential and commercial systems typically rely on two primary types of counterbalance springs to lift and lower the heavy door safely: torsion springs and extension springs. Understanding how each type functions can help you identify which system your home or business uses and better recognize when maintenance is required.

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are positioned horizontally on a solid metal shaft directly above the closed garage door opening. Rather than stretching, these springs operate using torque (a twisting force). When the garage door closes, cables attached to the bottom corners of the door pull on the drums, winding the spring tight and storing immense energy. When the door opens, the spring unwinds, transferring that energy to lift the door’s weight smoothly.

Because they distribute weight evenly across the entire shaft, torsion springs provide a highly balanced and controlled operation. They are the standard choice for modern sectional doors, heavier residential doors, and virtually all commercial applications. They are also built to last, typically holding a lifespan of 10,000 to 15,000 cycles (open/close sequences). From a safety perspective, torsion springs are generally preferred; if a torsion spring snaps, it safely remains wrapped around the inner metal shaft rather than flying loose into the garage.

Extension Springs

Extension springs are located on either side of the garage door, running parallel to the overhead horizontal tracks. Unlike torsion springs that twist, extension springs function by stretching out (extending) to store energy when the door is closed. When you activate your garage door opener, these springs tightly contract, utilizing a system of pulleys and cables to pull the door upward.

Extension springs are most commonly found in older residential homes, smaller or lighter single-car garage doors, or in garages with low headroom where there isn’t enough clearance above the door for a torsion shaft system. While they are a cost-effective option, extension springs experience a higher rate of wear and tear due to constant stretching and usually have a shorter lifespan of 5,000 to 10,000 cycles. Because of the extreme tension they hold when extended, they can become highly dangerous projectiles if they snap. For this reason, it is crucial that all extension springs are paired with internal safety cables to catch the spring and prevent severe property damage or bodily injury if a breakage occurs.
